BHAP welcomes Ms. Victoria van der Haas, our new PhD student at the University of Alberta

September 29, 2014

We welcome to the team Ms. Victoria van der Haas! Victoria is a new PhD student at the University of Alberta, supervised by Dr. Andrzej Weber.

Victoria's PhD research is based on the relationship between human tooth development and stable isotope ratios. She intends to analyze sets of teeth from individuals representing the middle Holocene Early Bronze Age cemetery of Khuzir-Nuge XIV in the Baikal region. She aims to contribute to the ongoing study of the individual life histories (health, diet, mobility and foraging) from this region and hopes to provide a better understanding of dietary variability among Holocene hunter-gatherers. Ultimately, the experience gained through this work can be applied to the materials from Hokkaido and Rebun Island, Japan, thus adding to the comparative study between both regions in Northeast Asia. Victoria also took part in the excavations on Rebun Island in summer of 2013 and 2014.
