Lacey Fleming and Dr. Robert Losey do zooarchaeological research in Vladivostok, Russia

April 1, 2015

Lacey Fleming, BHAP PhD student, has some news to report on her and Rob Losey's research trip to Vladivostok, Russia this past March. See below. Thank you to Lacey for sharing!

Dr. Rob Losey and I visited Vladivostok, Russia from March 8 through 13 to examine several assemblages of zooarchaeological remains curated by the Russian Far East University Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography. Hosted by the gracious Dr. Alexander Popov and his wonderful staff, we eased into our visit by sitting in on a Monday morning lecture given by another visitor, BHAP member Dr. Hirofumi Kato. We were then given a detailed tour of the museum's exhibits, guided by Dr. Popov himself.

Rob and I spent Tuesday, Wednesday, and most of Thursday going through the Museum's zooarchaeological collections at a furious pace with the assistance of Maria, the Museum's faunal specialist. We wrapped up our work Thursday afternoon and were treated to a driving tour of the city of Vladivostok and nearby Russkiy Island with several museum staff members, Boris and Ivan. We were even visited several of the sites whose zooarchaeological materials we had been working with at the museum ... and managed to meet a couple of dogs while we were at it!

Though Rob and I were dog-tired (no pun intended) from almost the moment we arrived, it was an excellent trip.
