The broad impact of Dr. Pavel Tarasov and his team’s palaeoenvironmental work on Rebun Island and Lake Kushu

April 14, 2016

Great news below from Dr. Pavel Tarasov, BHAP team member from Freie Universitaet Berlin:

Our study on Rebun Island and Lake Kushu has broader impact than just in the field of archaeology. Cooperation partners from London, UK working on tephra-chronology found volcanic ash Millennium tephra of Changbaishan Volcano from China in the sediment core from Lake Kushu. The radiocarbon chronology of the Kushu sedimentary record generated by Müller et al. (Holocene, in press) has been utilized to generate a Bayesian age-depth model, providing an age for the Kushu tephra which is consistent with high resolution ages determined for the eruption and therefore supports our geochemical correlation. The work will be continued. I believe this is important to note in a sense of the data dissemination as was recommended by the Evaluation Committee during the mid-term evaluation.

Congratulations to Drs. Pavel Tarasov, Stefanie Müller and the rest of the team for their important work!
